15 Apps Everyone Should Have In the Phone

The app market is flooded with more than 2 million apps, and new ones debut all the time. We’re all familiar with popular options like Facebook and Google Maps, and there are plenty of pointless apps too. What about little-known apps that provide real value, though? There are some surprising options out there, and we’ve hand-picked 10 of the most notable ones for your convenience.

1. Horizon

Isn’t it annoying when people post videos that were recorded while their smartphones were being held vertically? This cuts off the image and makes the picture look much smaller. If you constantly forget to hold your smartphone vertically while recording a video, this is the app for you. Regardless of how you hold your phone, it records the video in landscape – or horizontal – format.

2. Sleep Cycle Power Nap

All naps aren’t created equal. Research shows that a short, quick nap – or power nap – is far more refreshing than a long sleep during the middle of the day. This app helps you avoid oversleeping by playing a gentle alarm when the appropriate length of time has passed. Handily enough, it also includes a recovery nap mode and a single sleep cycle mode that lets you go through one full sleep cycle so you don’t wake up in the middle of REM sleep.

With PaperKarma, you just snap a photo of whatever unwanted mail you receive. As long as it’s addressed directly to you, the app will automatically contact whoever sent it to have you removed from their list. The best part is that it really works.

An App To Turn Your Phone Into A Mic

An App To Turn Your Phone Into A Mic1
Would you like to be able to turn your smartphone into a mic?
Crowd Mics, an iOS and Andriod app released at Launch Festival, offers a way to do this: the app connects the smartphones of people in the audience to the room’s sound system, offering them a personal microphone.
Wondering how it works? The event speaker simply plugs their smartphone into the sound system and creates a name and access code for the current event. Audience members can then download the app and use the code to join the event.
If members of the audience want to ask a question, they can tap their phones to join a list of people who have questions, which is then displayed on the presenter’s phone.
The presenter holds all of the power: they can enable individual microphones, mute microphones, or change the setting to ‘Open Mic’ so everyone can comment and get involved.
An App To Turn Your Phone Into A Mic
One of the best parts of this app is the option to text questions and comments to the speaker; ideal for anyone who hates the idea of speaking up in public.
The handy app comes with polling options as well, so there are a variety of ways to get feedback from the audience.
Crowd Mics requires that everyone using it is connected to the same Wi-Fi or wireless router device. Crowd Mics was created by brothers Tim and Seaon Holladay, after the brothers went to a meeting where the presenter was interacting with the crowd.
“We just couldn’t hear what the other people were saying,” Tim said. “Sean pulled out his phone and said, ‘I could FaceTime someone across the world and hear them perfectly, but I can’t hear the question someone is asking in the room…there has to be a better way.’”
Crowd Mics is free for the audience, as the presenter or organizer pays for access to the system. The price varies based on the size of the crowd, and is free for 20 people or less.

10 Tricks to Getting More Storage Out of Your iPhone

iPhones are all fun and games until you want to download the new iOS, or a new app, or take a photo. Suddenly you get a warning that you’re low on memory in your phone. And what do you do then? Time to clear out some space!

1. Close apps on home screen

IMG_3158
Even though you hit the home button and returned to the home screen, your app is still running in the background. Double tap the home button until all your open apps come up. Swipe up to close the app completely.

2. Delete your texts

IMG_3159
For every time you text your mom and send a funny photo to your BFF, it takes up space in your phone. Regularly go through your messages and delete the ones that you won’t be needing in the future, or those annoying ones from those friends we really don’t like. Simply swipe left on the message you want deleted and press “Delete.”

3. Only keep the songs you listen to

IMG_3161
While it’s tempting to have every song in your library available at your fingertips, it’s going to suck up all the space on your phone. It’s going to be hard, but you now have to decide which songs are “the ones” you’ll actually listen to on your phone. To get rid of all the others, go to the song you want to delete, swipe left and press “Delete.”

4. Delete old voicemails

IMG_3162
As with your texts, voicemails clog up the space on your phone. So it’s time to clear out! Swipe left on those unwanted voicemails and press “Delete.” And you never have to listen to your mom nag you about your life failures again!

5. Optimize photo storage

If you have a lot of photos, this is definitely for you! Optimizing photo storage means that your photos are saved in a way that it saves space on your phone. This is super great if you’re a big photography person, or if you just really enjoy taking pictures of your cat every hour.

6. Delete USELESS apps

IMG_3163
Yes, we know that you love Candy Crush more than you’ll ever love your significant other, but that doesn’t make it a useful app. Delete those apps that you never use, wish you used more, or downloaded six years ago and forgot you even had.
It’s time to get rid of them. I know it’s hard, but you can do it. Press on the app until it shakes and press the “x” to delete it. Bye bye, Candy Crush. Hello, extra storage space.

7. Get rid of those in-app purchases

IMG_3164
If you’re not listening to podcasts, delete the ones in the podcast app. If you have lots of junk mail, delete it all in your mail app. Get rid of all of those by swiping right and pressing “Delete” and it will clear space like you wouldn’t believe.

8. Use apps that save space

Apps like Shutter save your photos to an online server, meaning that while the photos are saved, they don’t take up any space on your phone. These kinds of apps are really great if you’re taking a lot of photos and videos, especially at an event.

9. Close Safari tabs

IMG_3165
While it may not seem like your Safari tabs are taking up space on your phone, they really are. After you finish Googling how to make a billion dollars, close your tabs to save a little space. And we all know a little goes a long way.

10. Back up your phone

If you really want to save space, it’s time to connect your phone to your computer. Move your photos to your desktop and delete them off your phone. Simply plug your USB cord into your phone and computer and follow the prompts to move everything over. Easiest way to clear your phone.

How to use WhatsApp on your PC and Mac

WhatsApp is the bread and butter of instant messaging nowadays. It's backed by Facebook and hundreds of millions of users, but how do I use WhatsApp on PC and Mac? Read on for three tutorials using WhatsApp Web, Pushbullet, and Bluestacks.
  • WhatsApp tips and tutorials
  • How to get WhatsApp on your tablet

How to use WhatsApp with the official Chrome web-client (WhatsApp Web)

This is the easiest solution on our list, as WhatsApp has developed an official web-client for this purpose.
Go to web.whatsapp.com on your PC and scan the QR code with your phone (using QR code reader or a similar app), then follow the installation instructions. This provides you with all of the regular WhatsApp functionality, like voice and picture messaging, but there is a caveat. The WhatsApp web-client acts as a "mirror" for your device, meaning you will only receive messages on WhatsApp web if you receive it on your phone also. Your device has to be switched on, and connected to the internet, to use the web-client.

The above method will work for anybody running a Windows machine, with WhatsApp on their smartphone, and using Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Chrome.

How to use WhatsApp on PC and Mac with Pushbullet

Pushbullet presents another easy way to get WhatsApp on your PC or Mac. Like WhatsApp Web, Pushbullet mirrors messages and notifications on your PC and also enables you to reply to them directly.
You will need to download the app on your phone, and register, then log into Pushbullet in your browser via the website. One this is done, close your browser and open it again; it should be automatically configured to display any notifications you receive. If it's not, you can easily tinker with the settings to suit your liking.

How to use WhatsApp on PC and Mac using BlueStacks

This process takes about ten minutes and involves installing an Android emulator known as BlueStacks. This program will replicate your Android smartphone on your computer and it can be installed from Google Play.
IMPORTANT:
  • When you activate WhatsApp on your computer using this method, the account on your smartphone will be deactivated, as it only allows one account per device.
  • You can also use YouWave or Wassapp to achieve similar results, but we've found Bluestacks to be the most reliable solution.
1. Download and install BlueStacks.
2. When you open the program you will see a search icon in the top left hand side which you will use to search for WhatsApp (or just click the WhatsApp icon if it is there when it loads).
